The photograph shows a section of soil which has been carefully removed from a green. Whilst it isn’t the most exciting action shot ever it does reveal a lot about the condition of our greens at Ombersley.
You can see lovely friable soil within the root zone and also the lovely long white roots which are growing deep within the greens.
A poor quality green which may have suffered from water logging or compaction would likely have shallow roots, possibly a black layer near the surface and it would even have a less healthy smell to it.
